There are a number of visa types in Hong Kong depending on the purpose of visiting. Hong Kong Immigration Department is responsible for processing seven main talent admission schemes of Hong Kong, targeted at attracting skilled professionals and investors:

  • Top Talent Pass Scheme (TTPS) – the Top Talent Pass Scheme is for Hong Kong high-income earners and graduates of globally ranked universities
  • General Employment Policy (GEP) – work visa applications for professionals and entrepreneurs
  • Admission Scheme for Mainland Talents and Professionals (ASMTP) – for mainland China professionals with specialist skills
  • Immigration Arrangements for Non-local Graduates (IANG) – for graduates of Hong Kong institutions

  • Technology Talent Admission Scheme (TechTAS) – fast-track for R&D technology positions
  • Admission Scheme for Second-Generation of Chinese Hong Kong Permanent Residents (ASSG) – for second-generation emigrants returning to Hong Kong

Visa free entry into Hong Kong is allowed to about 170 countries, including those with visa free period ranging from 7 to 180 days depending on nationality. British citizens are allowed to visit Hong Kong without a valid visa for long periods of time, while Indian nationals should undergo pre arrival registration before entering Hong Kong. Taiwanese nationals can visit Hong Kong visa-free for 30 days, and the holders of APEC Business Travel Cards can visit Hong Kong visa-free for 60 days. Chinese nationals should obtain a Two-way Permit for visits to Hong Kong.

A visa application must be submitted to the Immigration Department, and the application for a Hong Kong visa usually involves a valid passport having enough blank pages and validity of at least six months. Short-term visitors are generally not allowed to work or study in Hong Kong – they are not entitled to change their immigration status upon arrival in case of lacking a special entry permit or scheme. Kosovo passport holders are denied entry to Hong Kong.
